Gol Gumbaz   |   Vijayapura

Gol Gumbaz, which literally derives its meaning from the terms ‘Gola Gummata’, or the ‘circular dome’, is Karnataka’s most famous mausoleum. It is located in Bijapur, and is the tomb of Mohammed Adil Shah, the Sultan of Bijapur.

The tomb is typical of Deccan architecture. The structure of the tomb is basically a cube, capped by a large dome. The acoustics inside the dome cause even the lowest of the sounds to echo in a pleasant manner, and hence the dome is called “The whispering gallery”. There is also a viewers’ gallery at the outside of the cube just below the dome. The staircase to this gallery can be found inside the four supportive structures that surround the cube. The supportive structures resemble pillars, but are octagonal in shape and are also dome-capped, adding to the beauty of the Gol Gumbaz. Gol Gumbaz is Karnataka’s biggest single chamber space.
