Mahadeva Temple Itagi   |   Koppal

The Mahadeva Temple at the town of Itagi in Yalburga taluk in Koppal district is an architectural twin of the Amrutheshwara temple at Annigeri.

An inscription inside the temple dating back to 1112 CE calls this temple ‘Devalaya Chakravarthi’ or the emperor of temples, and this temple has also been observed as the finest architecture in Karnataka after Halebeedu. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the shrine is also another example for the Chalukyan style of excellent architecture. It is believed to have been built by Mahadeva, who was the Army Commander of the Westeren Chalukya King Vikramaditya ||. Intricate sculptures, carvings on walls and pillars mark the glorified style of architecture of the times in this temple. The architectural masterpiece is protected under the national Archaeological Survey of India.
