Nagarhole National Park   |   Kodagu, Mysore

You can’t call it a close if you are a nature lover in Karnataka. Recognised by the UNESCO is the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which includes the 37th Tiger Reserve under the Project Tiger – the Nagarhole National Park. Also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park, it spreads over the boundaries of Kodagu and Mysore districts of Karnataka.

Nagarhole National Park is nature at its best. Not only with its natural cover of forest, hills, valleys, small streams and waterfalls, but also with its magnificent completion of food chain within itself.

The major elements of a food chain that one can witness are the predators and the preys. On one side of the table are the carnivores like the Bengal tiger, Indian leopard, the sloth bear and the striped hyena. Herbivores found in Nagarhole National Park are chital, sambar deer, barked deer, four-horned antelope, gaur, wild boar and the Indian elephant. This park also allows tourists to see the elephants in their happiest form- within luxurious forests and thick bamboo thickets! Other animal attractions include the gray langur, bonnet macaque, jungle cat, slender loris, leopard cat, civet, mongoose, European otter, Indian giant flying squirrel, Indian giant squirrel, porcupine, golden jackal, chevrotain, hare and pangolin.

Nagarhole National Park has also been recognised as an ‘Important bird area’ and one can also find over 270 species of birds at Nagarhole, ranging from the blue-bearded bee-eater, scarlet minivet and Malabar whistling thrush to the more common ospreys, herons and ducks. The park is also home to the 'critically endangered' Oriental white-backed vulture, and a number of other vulnerable and greater spotted bird species.

In all, the Nagarhole National Park could be called a heaven for nature enthusiasts. Animal and bird lovers could find all that they want here, ranging from natural habitants of the area to the migrated rare species of flora and fauna. Resourced by rich sources of water and other elements, Nagarhole National Park is for all reasons the pride of Karnataka.
