Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary   |   mysore

The famous ornithologist Salim Ali, persuaded the Wodeyars of Mysore to declare small islets near the Kaveri river as a wildlife sanctuary in 1940. The islets had formed important nesting grounds for birds then, and today they are popularly known as the Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary. About 180 varieties of birds and a number of rare mammals are housed in this sanctuary, making it one of the smallest but grandest sanctuaries in the world.
